Corgi, Thornycroft bus

The Corgi range included many 1:50 scale models in the eighties and a lot of vans, trucks and buses under the Thornycroft name.

This is number C884, as with many Corgi models, different colours and liveries attracted different numbers.


This is a lovely detailed model and one of my favourite bus types, there was also various wheel types and along with the red above, some have dark red, yellow or even black spoked wheels.


Although these are sold and promoted as a limited edition, that is based on the livery and colour rather than the casting, so although there may be only 5000 of this colour and livery issued, there are also many other liveries and colours that are also classed as limited editions, this unfortunately has devalued these models and can be picked up quite cheaply on places like Ebay but ideal for the collector and buyer that wishes to swell the ranks of their collection with good quailty models in as new condition for very little outlay.

That said there are collectors that strive to collect all the variations issued, I once said I wouldn’t get involved in the variation game, but I did and collect, or try to collect all variations and colours of the older Matchbox 1-75 issues.

The real bus

The Corgi Thornycroft bus is likely to be based on a 1914 type bus as shown below.

Generally known as the B type bus the petrol driven motor buses first entered service in London in 1899 and many different and often very unreliable types appeared throughout the 1900′s. In 1910 the 34 seat B type was introduced and proved to be so successful that it revolutionized bus operation in London and resulted in the withdrawal of all remaining horse buses.

Over 2900 were built and 1300 of them served as troop transports on the Continent during the first world war.


Thornycroft started out with steam vans and lorries. John Isaac Thornycroft, the naval engineer, built his first steam lorry in 1896. Thornycroft’s first petrol vehicle was built in 1902 and the company completed the move into internal combustion engine power in 1907.
